This left border is created with a gif that is very small. It is just 3 pixels high and about 1500 pixels wide. When it is used as a border, it tiles and gives your page a border down the left hand side, like this page. But the gif for this page also has a band down the right. So you get both a left and right border with your layout in a different colour between the two.

This demo has a border down the left and right side. Same technique, but the gif has a band down the left, a gap in the middle, and the rest of the right is the blue colour.
