Here's how to set up NOF's inbuilt publishing tool for publishing your site to the web.

I'm assuming that you've already registered with an ISP and that they've filled you in on the details of their server, your username and your password. These are all referred to below.

It's also worth noting here that while NOF is a great web authoring program, its ftp publishing tool is not its strongest point. Many of us choose to use a third party tool to publish our sites. These include CuteFTP and WS-FTP. When you use one of these, you see a listing of the files in your Local Publish directory, and a listing of the files on your server. And you can choose which to drag from local to remote. NOF's inbuilt tool is like driving blind - you don't get to see things visually like that. However, once it is set up, it can effectively and successfully publish your site.

1. Go to Publish view by clicking the Publish button:

2. Once in Publish View, click the Publish Settings button

3. Click New Profile

4. Now, select the Remote radio button

5. Where is says Profile Name, type a name that you are happy with. This doesn't have to be the name of your server or anything like that. Mostly, you will have only two publish profiles - your local publish profile, and your remote publish profile. So something like Remote Publish is fine here. Here's an example (a real one for a simple non-profit site I administer):

6. Where it says FTP Host, type in the name of the server your ISP has given you. These used to have some weird names. For instance, for my samag example site, the FTP address I had to use until recently was halibut.pnc.com.au . Now it is just the name of the website itself. Much simpler. But check with your ISP. They will give you the EXACT address to put in here.

7. Where it says Directory, type in the name of the directory your ISP has told you to use for your HTML files. The directory is www for my example site. That's pretty common, but I've sometimes (depending on ISP) had to upload to a directory called html. Yours could be different again. Your ISP will tell you EXACTLY the name of the directory to put in here.

8. Now type in your user name and password. You'll get these from your ISP too. Note that my user name is the same as my site name. Yours might not be that way. Again, you get them from your ISP who will assign you a user name and a password.

(Ignore Advanced publis settings and Save as Global Profile. See below for a note on advanced settings. You would save as global profile if all of your sites were to be uploaded to this address. I administer a number of sites, but they all have different server details so I ignore this setting.)

9. Now publish your site. Don't forget to select your Remote Publish profile, not your Local Publish profile:

I always check Publish changed assets only. If you do this, NOF checks the size of the asset on the server and compares it to the size of the asset on your local machine. If they are the same, it doesn't bother uploading it since it's already there. This saves time.

Advanced Publish Settings

You'll notice on the Publish Settings palette (see the screen grab earlier on this page) a link called Advanced publish settings. You should have no need to touch these. You will only need to change them if your ISP has supplied you with additional information to that which I've detailed above. Then you will need to delve here, but for most circumstances, the instructions above will be all you will need.

(I will add info on these shortly, but as I said, you will probably never need to use them. The instructions above should be all you will need to publish your site successfully.)
