Outlook Express 6.0 News Reader set up

I will go through all set up procedures, you may skip to the news reader settings section if you already have your newsgroups set up and know the basics. The examples are for Outlook Express 6.x.  If you use a different version you may find the set up slightly different for you.  If you are not a gotFusion NetObjects Fusion Users Group Community member you can still enjoy the top tier technical support from gotFusion by signing up for our free support which will give you access to all of the NetObjects newsgroups as well as all of the gotFusion extended support newsgroups.

To subscribe to a News Server:
  • From the Outlook Express menu option Tools select > Accounts
  • Select the News Tab > Add button > Add News.....  option.
  • In the wizard enter the name you want to display in your posts in the 1st input box.
  • Enter your e-mail address in the next wizard screen (include any spam blocks you want).
  • Enter the name of the News NNTP Server (www.gfwebforum.com for the gotFusion news groups), then check the box My news server requires me to log on (if the newsgroup requres you to log on to read and post.  The gotFusion newsgroups require you to log in).
  • To log onto the gotFusion news server enter the account name and password that you use to log into the gotFusion web site when you visit and use the tutorials and other resources.  If you are not a member of gotFusion and wish to enjoy the extended product support provided by gotFusion click this link.  If you are already a member but you have forgotten your gotFusion Username/Password click this link and the information will be sent to you
  • Click Finish and the account shows up in your list of news server accounts

Setting up your News Server account to post properly

  • Select the Advanced tab and check the plain text sending format.
  • You can change the new server display name, your name, your e-mail, and other items from properties.
Subscribing to news groups on the news server:
General News Reader Settings for the Fusion News groups:
  • From the Tools menu choice select Options.
  • Click the Send tab and un-check respond in same format option and check plain text for news groups.
  • Click the Read tab and change the number of messages downloaded from 300 to 600 or un-check the box to download all messages regardless of how many.
  • Click the Maintenance tab and change the number of days before deleting to at least 30. Outlook Express will remove old threads after a week if you do not change this setting. If you wish to retail all messages un-check the box.  NOTE: This is a global setting and what you enter will be applied to all news servers and groups in your outlook express program.
  • If you are resetting a news group and wish to download all messages in the group, un-check both the download Number of Messages and the number of days you wish to retain messages. All messages ever posted to that group will be downloaded (see tutorial on resetting groups)

Set your Outlook Express News Reader to post in plain text and un-check the option to respond in the same format as the original post.  This is the proper way to post in a public newsgroup. Many people use dedicated news readers that cannot display html posts and will not be able to help you if you post in HTML.  If you MUST make a post in HTML you can select the Format > Rich Text option from the individual message you are writing.
